November 12, 2004 - Ester

Last night we had dinner with our friend Ester from Spain. For appetizers, we sampled some pan-fried pizza being made by a Chinese neighbor who shares a common kitchen with Ester. For the main meal, Ester prepared a meal of spaghetti with red sauce, tuna and cheese. It sounds a bit weird, but was actually quite nice. We also had vegetarian sushi rolls, Australian red wine, a salad of corn, shredded carrot, lettuce and Krab (fake crab.) Due to a record number of typhoons this year, the vegetable crops suffered immensely. A mediocre head of lettuce costs about $4.00. We used 4 leaves of lettuce and did not let any of them go to waste. Check out the moldy roll she tried to feed Tim! She was shocked to see the blue-green growth since she had eaten one of these same rolls for breakfast.

We also extracted information from Ester on her former life as a rowdy street skateboarder. After two broken legs, she now prefers snowboarding. She is very 'genki'. the Japanese word for full of vitality and physical energy.

The center of this palm look very soft and pet-able I recently read about an art form called katagami where sheets of hand-made mulberry paper are treated with persimmon juice and then cut or punched into very delicate beautiful patterns. They are then used as templates for printing on fabrics. . I was thinking this would make a wonderful print for fabric.
