October 21, 2004 - Typhoon Tokage Aftermath

Just as quickly as it appeared - it disappeared.. At about 11:30 last night we were getting a bit worried how long we would have to listen to the clatter of the wind punctuated by the occasional ringing of the doorbell. Then at about 12:00 the wind stopped. Totally. It was instantly eerily quiet. The following morning I took a picture of a nice new channel cut into the neighboring playground.
I've had some time to visit local buildings of interest on the weekends. This place is so littered with Tadao Ando buildings (very famous Japanese architect based in Osaka) you just about trip over them everywhere you go. For instance, the day before yesterday I was going to the prefectural office to get my motorcycle license. While riding on the train I started thinking that this looked like the location of an Ando house (near Akashi Bridge) that was featured in Architectural Record a few months ago. Not more than ten seconds later I saw the very same house from the window of the train.

There are also many interesting design ideas to find by chance. I've included a few pictures of shipping containers that have been transformed into storage units. I took them to send to Christopher Pardo, a fellow student who did the container re-use project in David Miller's UW Architecture studio last spring..
