It's Saturday a.m. and Tim and I are enjoying a lazy cup of coffee. Today we will be meeting our host family at a big party. We have heard that host families can be either excellent or less interested in showing their charges a good time. We are hoping to get a family that is interested in spending some time together.
I just received my favorite birthday present (perhaps ever) from Tim yesterday. He spent about 4 hours straightening out my messed-up University of Washington email account, created a new account on his homepage (archilibra.com) and had it all sent to Microsoft Outlook Express on my computer. Yipeee. It's like a dream come true! It's tough to get good tech help so far away from my internet provider, so I will be phasing out my dmhammer@u.washington.edu account. (Now you can reach me at diana@archilibra.com.) We survived the typhoon and it was a fun atmosphere around here. Since we were not worried about the roof of our house blowing off or our cars being hit by flying objects or gardens being destroyed, we were free to kick around in the rain, lean into the wind, take photos, and fold origami cranes with some other folks from our dorm. The crane-folders included one girl from Japan, one from Mexico, one from Spain, one guy from Yemen and another from Bangladesh standing by. It blows my mind that these folks have to learn English as well as Japanese. If they don't speak either, it is quite difficult to get around.. |
